Putting the Pumphouse in Pumphouse Shiraz | Video
The wine feature in this month’s newsletter - which come to think of it I don’t share much of on the blog - is the Backsberg Pumphouse Shiraz 2006. In putting together the newsletter, I went up to the vineyard armed with my video camera, and took the above video.
The vineyard block is 2.08 hectares (5.14 acres) in size and is the source of much of the grapes which go into our Pumphouse Shiraz. Thinking about the 2009 vs 2008 vintage, the block has produced exceptional quality in both years. As far as wine style goes, the block tends to show more Rhône-like characteristics (click here for some basic info on the Rhône). By Rhône-like, I mean the wine exhibits lots of spice (black bean sauce, cloves, pepper and liquorice) with very silky tannins. This is when compared to our Trek Shiraz block, which can be a bit more showy. The colour is also generally good, with the wine being a deep dark purple.
I am a completely biased fan of the wine. It is also cracking with food, which is key. The Wine Spectator doesn’t mind the wine either, recently giving it 90 points. Please let me know your experience with the wine.

Competition is good. Spoken like a true economist. About the wine: I too, am a fan.

Economics makes the world/wine go round! I knew studying 4 years of microeconomics would come in handy some time! SB
